In a fire situation FireCuff is designed to expand inwards and crush the spigot of the fan or vent. This action closes the hole in the ceiling creating an effective barrier to smoke, flames and heat. Unlike other intumescent fire stops this FireCuff does not need any additional support and can only expand inwards.
Extractor fans and ventilation ducting are widely used in domestic and commercial building and are often installed in the ceiling. Ceilings are subject to fire regulations and must be fire protected in accordance with Approved Document B of the Building Regulations.
Once a hole is made in the ceiling for the installation of a thermoplastic fan or vent, the integrity of the ceiling for the installation of a thermoplastic fan or vent, the integrity of the ceiling and its ability to perform in the event of a fire is significantly reduced. To reinstate the original fire rating of the ceiling a suitable fire stop must be fitted.
The popularity of forced and controlled ventilation is increasing as it can be much more energy efficient than traditional ventilation methods. The use of centralised ventilation units and heat recovery units result in the building being subject to penetration holes through the structure, creating pathways for the passage of both fire and smoke. The ability of the fire to move all around the building via the ventilation system make it ever more important to protect all ceiling mounted fans and vents.
Where ventilation ducting penetrates a Fire Rated separating element of construction, such as a wall, ceiling or floor slab, a Fire Stop needs to be fitted around the ducting at the position of the penetration to maintain the fire resistance of the separating element.
