Hi Joanna,
The gravity flap grille will be more than enough, too many would create more air resistance making it harder for the air to escape. I would recommend getting the backdraught shutter instead as people complain the gravity flaps make a lot of noise when it's windy. The quick search code for the backdraught shutter is QS199.

Several previous questions relate to this issue but Im not convinced by the answers. I am installing two fans that will vent through a joint vertical pipe that exits through the roof (near to vertical). The damper flap will therefore rest in the horizontal position on the lip and some force appears to be required to push it open from this position. There are limited options for creating a horizontal run without inserting some right angles, reducing air flow. I want to use a backdraught shutter on both fans, one of which is a trickle fan. Can you assure me that the flap will open sufficiently if installed in a horizontal position within a vertical pipe, on the low flow of air pushed up by the trickle fan.

Hullo. Please could you tell me if I could use DUCVKC303 (with a short section of 100mm pipe) to effectively lengthen the male section of a standard 100mm ceiling extraction fan? I need to connect a fan (not yet purchased) to an existing flexible hose (presumably 102mm) which has tears in the first 50mm, so an extended connection length might allow me to bypass this and achieve a reasonable seal, as well as have the benefit of the backdraft shutter. Hope this makes sense! Thanks very much for any advice you can offer; Im ready to order the necessary items from you.

The purpose to blow open when the fan is on and then as Ive read the flap then falls closed by gravity once the fan stops to stop any back smells coming through if you are connected to another system which I am. This vertical pipe runs into a horizontal tee piece. One end going to the outside and the other is an extractor in another room. My concern is that the flap doesnt seen to close with gravity. Even if I hold it in my hand and push the flap up it wont fall back into place. My worry is its not going to do the job I bought it for. Let me know what you think please

Read moreanswer nowA Hello GordonThis one is not really designed to be installed in a vertical duct as when the spigot is opened it becomes balanced and there is no weight to make it fall back into place. For your requirements we would suggest the Manrose 1231 which has a hairspring close mechanism, this can be found by entering QS18115 in the quick search bar.

I have handled these products before and know how delicate the gravity hinged-flaps can be. Answer 2 states cannot be used in vertical run. Does this not apply to downward pumped flow only? My duct flows upwards to a pitched roof outlet. From memory, the shutter would fall shut, even better than in the horizontal position. Am I right please? Alternatively can you recommend a sprung-shutter type of the same outside diameter? Thank you.

Can this connector/ damper be used and will it work in the vertical position close to the extract unit where it can be accessed for cleaning purposes?

Yes the backdraught shutter has to be installed horizontal. If installed vertically it would be open all the time. I would recommend it to be installed just before going out though the wall.
